In the jewelry industry the platinum is (compared to the silver), a unique, expensive material. It has the many good properties of precious-materials, and it's price is much higher. It requires special tools, special welding-machines,  knowledge and foresight.

There are six precious-metal (Ir, Os, Rh, Pt, Pl, Ru). Their properties are very common (color, consistency), on the other hand they act differently as alloys or base-metals. The most common is the Rhodium and Platinum. The Rhodium is used for galvanization and for electrolysis. It prevents the wear-off or discoloration. Platinum is used as base-material, it is very expensive and hard to work with.

Platinum has great wear-resistance, but not hard. More like soft, white-gray metal. It's consistency is higher than gold's, it's heavier than a same jewelry. It is tractable, and it's used in expensive, diamond-jewelries.

Some turn-on:

To hammering certain platinum-alloys, they will get magnetic property; after heating they will loose them. Gold inlays are common in platinum jewelries. passing of the years, the gem-socket will be stronger and better, because the mechanical and external impacts will push the metal above the stone..

In one word platinum is a spectacular-metal. Only spectacular jewelries can be made from platinum. Right now it is not very popular, but it's price, quality and lifetime will make it fashionable.
